1966

One of the problems for an audience in 2011 is to imagine what it was like to live in Melbourne, or in a more wide sense, Australia. So how can a reader of this blog, and the images it will present, imagine the impact of Go-Set on its audience. In trying to meet this need, I will try to present information that will set the benchmark for life as a teenager, or for youth in general. Images that readers may be aware are the retro recreations of the period. The problem with this is that it has a tendency to only present an image of what was the best, or the most kitsch images from the period. This blog will do its best to present a believable truth of the period by seeking sources of original material to present in this blog to show the wider picture of what it was like to be a teenager in 1965 and leading into the 1966 that Go-Set presented. Ed Nimmervoll stated that Go-Set was a great store of culture of the period, in this sense we will examine the images and text in Go-Set in far greater detail, in order paint a more detailed view of life presented by Go-Set. We will also seek images from other popular media from the period to present a wider view of life at the time. We will need to benchmark life in Australia for teens at the end of 1965, to see how Go-Set was presenting life in 1966.
